South African Equestrian Scene Sees Major Developments
The South African equestrian scene has witnessed several significant developments recently, marking a period of growth and renewed international engagement.
Resumption of Direct Horse Exports to the European Union
After a 14-year hiatus, South Africa has resumed the direct export of horses to the European Union (EU). The first consignment of 32 horses departed on August 17, 2024, a milestone achieved through collaborative efforts between the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, Veterinary Services, the Department of Land Reform and Rural Development, and South African Equine Health and Protocols (SAEHP). This development is anticipated to boost the local economy and create jobs, with the thoroughbred horse racing and breeding industry alone supporting approximately 177,000 individuals.
Toyota's Partnership with Kyalami Park Club
In February 2025, Kyalami Park Club announced "The Year of the Legend," in partnership with Toyota South Africa. This initiative aims to elevate equestrian excellence by offering larger prizes, increased participation, and enhanced entertainment. Notably, the Olympic discipline of dressage has been added to the showjumping portfolio. The 2025 Toyota South African Dressage Championships, scheduled for September 15-21, will see the champion awarded a Toyota Starlet Cross, reflecting Toyota's commitment to the sport.
Renovation of Soweto Equestrian Centre
Deputy Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Ms. Peace Mabe, launched the renovation process of the Soweto Equestrian Centre on September 10, 2024. Founded in 2007 by South African showjumper Enos Mafokate, the centre aims to improve the welfare of cart horses in Soweto and introduce equestrian sports to disadvantaged communities. The renovation underscores the government's commitment to promoting inclusivity in sports.
Bloodstock South Africa Cape Yearling Sale Venue Change
Bloodstock South Africa announced a venue change for the Cape Yearling Sale, held on February 23, 2025. Due to the unavailability of Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, the event partnered with The South African Riding for the Disabled Association (SARDA) and the Constantia Valley Riding Club, hosting the sale at the SARDA Centre in Constantia Heights. This collaboration highlights the equestrian community's adaptability and support for charitable organizations. bsa.co.za
Princess Anne's Visit to South Africa
In January 2025, Princess Anne undertook a solo two-day visit to South Africa. Her itinerary included visiting the South African Riding for the Disabled, planting a Princess Anne Rose at the British High Commission Residence Garden, unveiling the Cape Town Labour Corps Memorial, and visiting the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation. This visit marked her first to South Africa since 2012.
These developments reflect a dynamic period in South Africa's equestrian industry, characterised by international collaboration, corporate partnerships, infrastructural improvements, and royal engagement, all of which contribute to the sport's growth and accessibility.
